Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

What is ESWT?

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment that stimulates the body’s

natural healing process by using sound/pressure waves. It can relieve pain and promote healing of

injured tendons, ligaments and other soft tissues.

What does ESWT treat?

ESWT is used for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, especially chronic issues affecting medium to

large tendons and their insertions on bone, such as:

• Plantar fasciitis

• Achilles tendinopathy

• Retrocalcaneal bursitis

• Tennis elbow

• Golfer’s elbow

• Calcific tendonitis

• Patellar tendinosis

• Chronic stress/non-union fractures

Why choose ESWT?

If you have ongoing pain related to an injury and are looking for an effective nonsurgical treatment,

shockwave therapy may be an option. Colavito Chiropractic requires payment in full prior to the

procedure. Please consult with your provider for a cost estimate.

What does ESWT involve?

ESWT is performed on an outpatient basis. A treatment typically takes 15–20 minutes. Patients usually

receive 3–5 treatments over several weeks.

Insurance coverage

Coverage for ESWT varies. Some plans cover it, while others may not. Patients generally pay upfront

and submit a claim to their insurance for possible reimbursement.

How successful is ESWT?

Success rates vary depending on the condition but generally range between 60–90%.

Who should NOT receive ESWT?

Please notify your provider if any of these apply to you:

• Pregnant or trying to conceive

• Taking anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
